All,

For those interested we will meet at the PUTIN at 10:15. I'm hopeful to already have the shuttle set and be ready to launch around this time.

Ben, I'll call you tomorrow evening and set everything up with you. Most likely I'll be awakening Saturday morning over in the Master Station side of town so if you live close to there I'll be glad to stop by and pick you up.

Jason, I'll call you and give you the info. like you asked even though you stood me up on the halloween voyage! I was gravely (nice pun huh!) disappointed when you didn't show and your absence caused me to spend my entire holiday weekend wondering/worrying if the reason you didn't show was simply because you no longer find me attractive or you think I've let myself go too much or if you just feel I've gained too much weight to be pretty. If its the latter please know that its common knowledge that neoprene pants make your butt appear much bigger than it really is, I swear!

Now I feel badly about being a pessimist (killjoy, curmudgeon, grouch, grinch, or whatever). It looks very likely that the Elkhorn will be fun-runable on Saturday. I'll stick by my prediction that it will be below 500 cfs, but it will be far from drying out.

Just to give you an idea of what the Elkhorn is like - I've only been on the lower Pigeon once, but in my opinion, its seemed pretty tame when I did it after 5 or 6 times on the upper Elkhorn at various levels - maybe its similar with the Elkhorn at 500.

Getting a roll seems pretty intimidating the first couple of sessions, but I'm glad the club pushes it so hard. Really makes a difference to the enjoyment and ability to try new things without having to swim so much - even though the first time you flip on the river, its such a shock, even if you can roll in the pool, its hard to keep your wits about you and do a roll.

Thanks to everone for the advise. I first thought the logo of the BWA was a bit cornie, but it seems true. I'm excited to meet everyone and get to know you all better. So thanks again. We did take an intro class on the Pigeon, the instructor looked over the fit and gear and was pleased with the outfitting. My daughter paddels a Jefe Chico, and seems to fit it well. She is very comfortable in the boat and on the water. I seem to have a bit more labrador in me, i seem to like to swim. I did however change boats after our instruction from a Draggorossi Ganster to a Prijon Hercules. Much better fit, infact the last time on the water was the much more comfortable and confident. No swimming, pretty nice. We will definitely be at the roll sessions.

As for teaching, the class was great for her and me. I feel like we are out to have fun, as long as she is safe, and enjoying it, the skills will come. No need to push to hard. She is competitive by nature so she pushes her self- safe and fun.

Not sure if Khorn got rain but the radar looked like it was possible. Just a few sprinkles here, just a mile from the hunt club on Boone Creek.

Welcome to the BWA Ben. I don't have a a lot to add to all the good advice that's been offered in this thread except to pass on a couple of lessons my wife and I learned from raising 2 kids who now love the sport and which we think are uber-important to being successful teaching kids whitewater paddling:

1) Make sure they have boats/gear that fits and paddling clothing that keeps them warm on the river. This is pretty self evident but is incredibly important to keeping kids safe and happy. Good used kids paddling gear is typically not too tough to borrow and if you have to buy will be easy to sell once they've outgrown it.

2) Always leave kids wanting more of the river (or pool) not less. If they aren't having a good time then it's best to stop right there and do something else - even if this means you've only been 5 minutes on the river and have driven 4 hrs to get there. Gentle encouragement is of course essential but the bottom line is that If they don't want it, you trying to make them will only insure that they eventually won't.

BTW, we have a TopoDuo K2 (2 person kayak) that has a lot of experience introducing kids (big and small) to whitewater that you and your daughter are most welcome to borrow anytime.

BO is right, the water is holding a little bit better than its usual 24 hr half-life. However, at this rate it will almost certainly be below 500 by Saturday. Yet I absolutely agree, also, that it can be paddled at 250 cfs. In fact, it is fun at that level! In fact, maybe the AW site should be adjusted accordingly, because it seems to discourage n00bies from considering the run below 500 cfs.

The cool thing about Elkhorn is that it channels. The bed is not very flat, so as the water runs out it tends to find the deeper channels and remains a good stream for whitewater paddlers. I guess that's true of a lot of rivers in the region. In contrast, this last summer I paddled the Deerfield (Massachusetts) with my son and his girlfriend this past June, catching the bubble after a small dam release. That stream has a very flat bed, so when the water gets low, there just ain't no place to go.

Hi Ben,

With an 11 year old, you'd be well advised to seek out other paddling parents in the club. Teaching your child to boat can be tricky business. Definitely come to the rolling sessions with her (kids are free with paying parent or guardian). Rolling sessions start a week from Friday at the Northside YMCA.

Additionally, talking to people face to face will give you a better feel for a lot of these issues and help you figure out who to make plans with.

Elkhorn is easily runnable down to 250 cfs. The last couple of miles are a little painful at this level in the winter, but it's completely doable without having to get out of your boat.
Because of the amount of recent precipitation and now that the stupid trees aren't feeding off of the water table, the level will begin to hold much longer. So don't throw in the towel on a run this weekend. You have to believe.

If you haven't already, get someone to check out your fit in the boat and other gear, mainly helmet. I went through winter roll sessions, the clinic, and one trip down the gorge section of the Elkhorn before someone mentioned I needed hip pads in my boat. They made a big difference.

A group did the Elkhorn early this year when it was around 400 cfs, which was my second trip. It was a little bony, but 400-500 is a good level for a first trip. Think my first trip was 800-900, flipped twice - swam once, rolled once. The rapids weren't bad, but picked a tough place to try to catch an eddy then peel out of it - flipped both times.

Hi Ben,
Welcome! Re: boating, we have folks at pretty much all levels going out all the time to local streams and further away. If there's water, someone's going to be there! Most of us usually boat the Elkhorn above Knight's Bridge. It's a solid step above the lower Elkhorn, but with the exception of the dam portage, hazards are minimal.

My daughter is 11 too. She started on the lower Elkhorn at age 8 and is now pretty solid in Class III. There has been talk from time to time in the past 9 mos to do a family trip / wkend. Nothing has materialized yet though ... maybe when it warms up next year.

Re: gear. A farmer john and drytop will serve you well. You can supplement with thin fleece underneath that has been treated with hydrophobic fleece treatment (like Nikwax Polar Guard) but you'll have to wash in Tech Wash or similar otherwise will have to retreat after every wash. I highly rec: investing in a quality 3 layer top such as the Kokotat Rogue or Immersion Research X-Jacket, Comp LX or Competition (Semi dry). Thick booties, neoprene head cover and pogies will help too.

Will be posting information re: rolls sessions early next week. A rock solid roll is your first defense against the cold.

Chris,

Your probably right. I've been praying for rain this week but so far the forecast doesn't seem to be changing at all and thus it looks to be sunny, cold and 0 rain all week. If this holds true the poor Khorn will be down to small trickle and unrunnable.

I've never run the Khorn below 500. How is it at 250-400?

Lyle, I think we'll be out of luck. I predict it will drop below 500 by Thursday, and below 250 before Saturday. I'll generally paddle the Elkhorn at 250 cfs or above.

Ben,

Myself and a few others I typically paddle with are all pretty new to the sport but plan to keep paddling the remainder of the fall and all winter long as well. You would be more than welcome to join us when we go but be forewarned we typically go early on the weekends. May try and go this weekend on the Elkhorn if the H20 holds up enough (over 500 cfs).

Shoot me your number and I'll give you a call next time we go. My number is 859-285-0845.

True. And to be honest, until I got a new dry top this spring, mine had become a "wet top". It absorbed water rather than repelling it.

I'd be a bit more adamant about it. If you are doing winter kayaking, absolutely get the cold-water gear. I have been paddling with a farmer John wet suit, dry top, skull cap, and poggies for several winter seasons, and have had a few swims in ice-cold water. That equipment has kept me alive. Even so, if you swim in the very first rapid (as I did twice trying to surf Church wave on the Elkhorn in winter), the rest of the paddle can be mildly uncomfortable even with the aforementioned gear. I wish I could use a dry suit instead, but I can't stand the agony of climbing into one.

Even if you have a roll, it is possible you will have to swim at some point. I think even our best paddlers have swum (since the alternative is to avoid pushing the envelop till things warm up again - and that's boring). And, in my case I find it is more likely that I will swim in the cold water. Why that is raises another point of awareness. When the cold water hits there is a strong impulse to gasp. That is a drowning hazard, and that is another reason to wear warm gear.

There will be plenty of opportunities for paddling with the group. Especially in the spring with the clinic. It's a great way to meet people. If you don't currently have a roll and cold water gear you'd have to be very careful of a swim these days...while the air temp may seem warm enough the combined air/water temps may lead to hypothermia. I'd recommend coming to the roll sessions which start November 13th (See the separate post on these sessions)..that way you'd be ready next spring for bigger water.
