Here's a rundown of what's happening on the Fork/Elkhorn City in October. Please note the NEW Baddlun-lite event...

10/1-2 800cfs releases

10/8-9 800cfs releases
Russell Fork Baddlun--Ratliff Hole, noon, Saturday (13 mile bike, 8 mile paddle, 3 mile run, 20 yard swim)
Baddlun-Lite--Elkhorn Beach, 4pm, Saturday (1 mile bike, 1 mile paddle, 1 mile run)
Paddler Appreciation--Elkhorn Beach, 5pm, Saturday

10/14-16 900cfs releases (Friday release!!!)
USA Canoe/Kayak Wildwater Team Trials
Saturday--Downriver Race, Finish at Elkhorn Beach (4pm)
Sunday--Sprint Race, Ratliff Hole (noon)

10/22-23 1000cfs releases
Lord of the Fork race (Garden Hole, Saturday, 2pm)

November--Minimum 400cfs releases every day through the month.
Reason why,
10 year gate inspection/maintenance New

Every 10 years or so, the Corp will do inspections/maintenance on the gate system. That means they have to lower the reservoir much further than winter pool. For Flanagan, the extra drop is 20 feet, making it a 36 foot total drawdown from summer pool.

They've calculated that that releasing 400 through the month will get them where they need to be to do the work in December.

Ratliff Hole is open for camping through October. Carson Island camping is iffy, but will be permitted the first weekend of October.
Free camping is also available on the riverbank in downtown Elkhorn City (includes porta-johns). Of course, camping is also available in the Breaks Interstate Park.

I run it all the time, both the Gorge section and the Upper. I have rafts, duckies and kayaks. Actually have a full-time VISTA and a Summer VISTA working for me here in Haysi at Friends of the Russell Fork.

Have a dozer working at Flannagan Dam on a parking lot for bikers....ready to let bids on hiking/biking trail to Breaks Interstate Park. Only have two million to start with but hoping coal company will be helping me later this summer to get us off to a bang.
Just call our office and Bernetta or Jon will answer. Bernetta just graduated from San Francisco State U and is a great young lady.
Just email thru Forf.weebly.com and Bernetta will keep me informed.
We are forever cleaning area rivers so come out and join us!
You too Brent, you big lug!

Allow two summer vacation days to take in the distinctive sites and sounds along this byway. In addition to illuminating Appalachian folk ways, the region also features Native American landmarks, pioneer settlements, coal mines, crafts centers, Civil War sites, and lovely mountain vistas.

In Ashland you'll find the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center, dedicated to the history of the region's Native Americans. The town also holds the historic Paramount Theatre, where live music is still performed. The Big Sandy River, largest lake in this part of Kentucky, is a haven for anglers spending summer vacation days in Yatesville Lake State Park.

Barry, The Army Corp has been resistant to levels above 250 for a variety of reasons. That seems to have been the majickal number they could live with without requiring more expensive capital outlays to accomodate the needs of the water releases for other groups such as fishermen. Steve Ruth has more details on all this. If we could only encourage him to post here.

Greetings, I started running as low as 187 cfs., in the mid-90's. I find 200 to 400 cfs and 475 to 600 cfs., my best levels. That as a C-1 paddler. 1000 cfs. is big volume running.

Best Regards,

I keep hearing 300cfs bandied about as the best level for summer releases. This too low for boating the upper and lower sections. Why this level and not another (like 1000?) Why any specific level at all? How about best available water?
