Allen,

Sockeye and I did not go down there due to the weather. I'll drive down Colstons Lane to the end and park, get out and walk to the downed trees rapid at the bottom of Colstons Pool. Its probably about 25' from the road :) I'll post what I find.

Again, this is not an access, but you can pull along the creek at Colstons Pool.

I propose that we delay the Elkhorn Chainsaw party until we are able to determine the state of the fallen tree at Colson's Lane. The recent high water may have taken care of our problem. Another reason for the delay is the high water level and expected cold temperature for Sunday. I will start another thread if we still need to work on this.

I suggest we start another thread about this project, and keep this thread committed to the chainsaw party.

Permission won't be a problem and I expect they may even provide a tractor/wagon.

Todd and I were discussing this last week...

We were thinking about a two part deal...

During the winter(ie, soon)while the weeds and poison ivy are not an issue... climb up the hill and roll the trash down into a pile nearer the creek.

Later... in the summer, when the water is low, we could drive a truck or tractor/wagon across the creek to load the junk, haul it away.

OK... JBob... git up that hill and start rolling that crap down... I'll do the video documentation.

Note: Larimore seems to think of that stuff as a sort of riverside art kinda thing... we may should ought to check with him to make sure he doesn't want any of it.

'Yo Todd,

Its me. Sockers and I have done many Elkhorn chain saw adventures.

"Don't worry Man,
we'll have a plan"

The most notable trip was our infamous "moonlight float chainsaw massacre" when Sox almost cut me in half with his chainsaw !!! In '97, there were big changes in the creek due to high winds ( tornado? "). The most memorable spot was at the bottom of ( chronological names ) : "Three Roses" - run was a no-longer-existing MIDDLE channel near the bottom, cut left and run over a shallow shelf and off a 1' V-shaped ledge like you'd find on the Hiwasee....."Golf course" or "Surf City" on left currently was not even runnable due to not enough water to get down it, it was like a highwater spillway. Then there was the flood that made "Angioplasty" too. . . . ..

But anyway, back to the moonlight float. . . . . We put in and ran the creek at midnight,. There was a good moon and warm temps. The creek was running about 4". We spent about 2 hours at the bottom where large sycamores had fallen off the main island and were blocking several well-used routes. We cut out as much as possible and the next heavy rain washed them away - it was a success !!! To this day I really don't know why we went at night. I can only imagine the nearby landowners trying to sleep with the distant sound of an angry chainsaw spooking them all the while. . . . . .

You know how sound travels after dark.

I'll keep you postedddddddddddd

I'll stress that I think this needs careful planning. Simply cutting the trees and dropping the trunks into the water at this point may only make the hazard worse.
OK everybody, great experience in positive enforcement !!

Sockeye and I will drive down to COLSTON's lane and take his chainsaw today. If we can't get the bigger trunk at this water level, we'll get what we can. It Will be better to do a low water, so it may be Sunday to finish the job.

I'll post here.

And BTW, Colston's lane is not an official access point and going down there you must be very careful about parking and getting off of the dead-end road.

Ellizabeth, I'd get my open boat and go with you but it's TOO WINDY for an open boat; Yes, it does resemble sailing in a way. . . . . . . .

Mike

P. S. Colston's lane can be found on a map and disregard the 1ST ONLY no trespassing sign you see, as the paved part is county road.

Thanks Allen for stirring this up. I agree with Todd, though. If the creek is up, it will be tricky. I would like to help, but this weekend may be a problem for me too. I will see if I can juggle things. It seems to be a bigger problem when it is running at this 800-900 cfs level. Higher water the other routes open up and it is easier to ferry in front of if you want to do that. It would be best to do this work if the creek got really low. But, where there is a will there is a way. Organize and the will and way should present itself. Thanks buddy.

I'll be glad to help out but I'm going to be in a 'conceal and carry' class. I figure that since I'm packin' anyway, I may as well do it legally. However, after the class, I'll be glad to meet you and take care of business. I've even got the chainsaw and would like nothing better than to rip the shit out of a few tree limbs. I'm in.

By the way.............thank you, all of you for a great day on the Elkhorn. Chris, a swim is only a swim. What is important is that you are okay and that your attitude is likewise. Some of the lessons of life, and paddling, are not comfortable but you learn from them.

It was a great time and I have the pics to prove it. Y'all e-mail me, Kayak1ky@aol.com, and I'll be glad to send you what I have. Allen, I have a couple of really good ones of you. I also have some of Tim now that he has that bumper shaved off his upper lip.

Valerie, you are beautiful, inside and out. Ben should get up each morning and thank his God that he is your husband.
