Great people, good water and hot temps. The class was as successful as I could wish it to be and I thoroughly enjoyed co-instructing with Larry. I am particularly proud of those folks who admitted to not being great swimmers yet took each water challenge on eagerly and aggressively. You aren’t fully aware of your progression of being in moving water yet.

I just wanted to say how much fun the entire group was to teach. I quite enjoyed getting to know folks who I was acquainted with previously and meet folks who I had yet to have the privilege to. Not to brag too much but you handled the scenarios in the end very well and I can say you are an asset to your fellow boaters. I am happy to report that the only carnage was from that young girl freaking out from Meryl’s Oscar nominating performance as a distracted crazed out swimmer. Truly a classic moment that will be hard to forget.

Thanks Larry and Meryl for making the class great for the students and to Dale for his help in our request for water. Brandon’s coordination was phenomenal making it easier on us to administer all the little details that normally take our focus from the class. Meryl your Penny story would make a great AW article by the way.

I had a blast and Grace misses all of her new friends already. Can’t wait to coordinate another class and we will look into perhaps teaching the advanced class curriculum that some folks requested.

Lets do it again!

Wow, what a great weekend! Thanks so much Larry and Jason. The class was informative, I try my best to have good foresight instead of hindsight. Oh, the swims, the knots, the teamwork, the after class get togethers, seeing JBob squeeze into my pfd.... it goes on and on, such a great time.

Also, I love seeing fellow paddlers out there taking the initiative to learn more. It's impressive to see such a large group with every member so gung-ho. Hopefully, there won't be a situation in which a rescue is necessary but, it's nice to know that my paddle buddies are up to the task.

It's a pleasure to teach these classes when the students are excited about the class and actively participating in the exercises and scenerios. Everyone was thinking and ready to get in the water and try stuff without any hestitation. Of course, the 90+ weather helped encourage that a bit I'm sure :^). I had a good time teaching this weekend.

And on your recommendations, Jason and I are doubling the price of the class next time ;^).

There will be an extra release given to us by the corps for the purpose of teaching the Swiftwater class for 14 BWA members and 2 rescue/fire personnel from Elkhorn city. We are getting a supplimental release to get the level to 200+ at Bartlick from 9AM till 2 PM. It takes the water about 2.5 hours to get to the gorge from Bartlick.

With that said I will paraphrase another instructor who taught at this spot recently:
The corp agreed to the request since the course was being taught non-profit for a non-profit organization. If a lot of people show up and boat to the take-out, this will prevent us from completing the course. We will have a lot of people swimming in the take-out rapid and have ropes across the river all day. This will be a hazard for boaters coming to the take-out. Please respect and take any river signals from shore seriously as these will be given for your safety (i.e., If we give you the stop signal, get to shore immediately and do not run the last drop before the take-out).

A solution to this problem would be to take-out at the upstream access about 200 feet from the normal take-out. I ask that any boaters take-out upstream this weekend to avoid conflicting with the SWR course drills and scenarios. The best way to handle may be to park in the normal lot and hike to your vehicle. This is a very short and flat hike. One paddler could come back and get a vehicle for the boats. This would keep things less congested at the upstream access.

Here are some directions via Steve Ruth (russellfork) regarding taking out upstream of the normal takeout:
"it's very easy to take out at the top of the rock bar on river right that starts the sluicy thing that makes the surfing wave.
don't get tore up about not being able to surf, there's no wave at 200 anyway.
and by the way, 200cfs is a great level for first time gorge runners. very forgiving. BUT you can still run the double boof at Tower and the Box at Climax if you want. 3rd drop is the hardest move at this level.
if there's 200, there'll be a handful of locals around all weekend. more information at www.russellfork.info if you want it."

I appreciate boaters doing everything possible to ensure safety of our class location and these folks get the best class possible.

Regards,
Jason Foley

You know that is another good point Hanley and Jason about the trucker's hitch - my favorite knot. You can do about anything with it when it comes to cranking down on something tight! Every boater should learn that one (and shuttle bunnies too!).

I vote knot tying session/roll session combo since i am assuming most folks might want to practice rolls in case of opportunities to boat on the lI-III section of the russellfork....

we could start tomorrow night and have 3 sessions before the training....whereas there is only one opportunity if we have it before the meeting on tuesday....that way, if you can't go to one, you have other opportunities

I am unsure I will be able to help out since I dont know whether or 'knot' I will be back from SC/NC by meeting time. Hanley I think this is a great idea and if I can make it I will bring 4-5 throw ropes and some cording as well. The trucker, butterfly and munter hitch (used with a caribiner) are nice additions but we wont go into them much in the course.

The trucker is an important knot since I know a lot of folks who dont use tie down straps as well as they can hitch boats down on racks with the trucker.

I applaud the enthusiasm that appears to be mounting for this class. I can promise everyone will learn a lot and take it with them on the river later as well.

Hanley: That is a good idea! Let's do it. I can be there at 6:30 in the parking lot. And, we should do it also, as Bethany suggests, around roll session time. The more the merrier. Why not? I appreciate boaters with ropes that know how to use them. Since I am still boatin, I know I am in between swims and my swims are generally on something where, "yes, please throw a rope", would seem to be in order! lol
