Updating/changing pages using Internet Explorer?
Posted by: gdalton (IP Logged)

I can't seem to make changes to "my" river pages. The only browser I have access to is IE (work computer used at lunch break, so cannot update or change browsers).

Problem is: I make changes to my Reach descriptions, etc. then hit the update/make public buttons, but the page never really changes.

I need to change some safety info on the Maury R. VA (Goshen Pass) page, and add some access info to the Bottom Creek, VA pages so I'd really like to get some help with this issue.

TIA,
Gordon Dalton

Just want to make sure of your sequence of events. The following normally should work.

1. You make changes to the description.

2. You hit the "Update Edit Copy" button at the bottom of the page. (This should 'send' the changes a 'working page' copy, saved for you to see while in edit, but not available to the public.)

3. You hit the "Make Changes Public" button at the top of the page. (This should 'commit' your changes from the 'working page' and make them available for all.)

If you reverse #2 and #3, you'll have problems. If you do not do all three, you'll have problems. (Ok, there are exceptions, where #2 is not needed, where your 'working page' is updated simply by moving between tabs in the edit. However, whatever 'final' page you make changes on, make sure to hit "Update Edit Copy" at bottom, before hitting "Make Changes Public" at top.)

If you are certain you are using this sequence, then your problem is beyond my scope to assist, and will require the attention of the development/programming team (Matt, Ryan, et al).

I've also discovered that if you hit "Make Changes Public" too soon after "Update Edit Copy" you can lose everything as well.

The "Make Changes Public" button appears and you can click it; but if you just wait a bit more the page keeps changing. Wait until everything settles down first.

what I did here at the end of December was make the "make changes public" button give you directions to go to one of the preview tabs and use the button under the preview tab.

The purpose of this was to force you to change the tab which will commit any changes that your previously working on. That gets rid of the confusion between the update edits and update the river buttons. It also gives you a good idea of what your changes will look like once they're committed to the website.

This is not a permanent fix but it should solve the immediate issues that have been reported.

I saw that, and I gotta tell you: forcing us to go through the Preview window slows down the process quite a bit. I'm glad that this is a temporary fix, because I don't see it as a good permanent solution.

Any suggestion for a permanent fix? I could make the update button automatically commit when you publish changes but I think that could have bad consequences as well.

I don't mind going through the preview window before I publish changes. Gives me one last overview of the page. The preview does not always guarantee what you see on the real page but its close. Sometimes I forget whether i have published the page already or not. There is no indication or change after you publish as far as I can tell.

I did a couple of updates today on rivers and on my connection I thought that the preview to publish worked pretty well. I was able to skip the update edits button and all my edits took when I hit the publish button. Total edit on one field on the river took about 30 seconds on my 3 mb/s Internet connection.
