I did it in the past but cant remeber how. (it was before AW change it's...). How do I link a gage to the river, meaning, so that when someone views it before clicking on it, it will be 'color-coded' ie: ble to high, ect.?

JD,

1. Goto the Stream editing interface (either by going through Stream Team Project, Manage My Streams, and clicking on "Edit" next to a stream that's in your quiver, or by going to the stream of interest and clicking on "Edit" in the right-hand frame).

2a. In the "AW Gauge ID" field, type some of the beginning characters from the gauge of interest. (i.e., for Carter's Creek at Roslyn, type "Carter".) Click on the little "arrow" icon to the right of the input field.

2b. Or you can add the Gauge ID by using the three-, four-, or five-digit gauge ID. You can find that in the URL for the gauge of interest. For instance, the Hoosic in Schaghticoke gauge is gauge # 8541. One easy way to get the gauge ID is to goto the list of state gauges (for e.g., NY State Gauges) and mouse over the gauge of interest. With most browsers, you'll see the URL in the bottom of your browser window.
(I find entering the gauge ID easier than typing the gauge name. Right now, the gauge lookup utility isn't finding gauges for me--no idear why not.)

3. When the interface gives you a few gauges to choose from, click on the gauge that you want to use, to select it.

4. In the "Units" field, type either "cfs" (for flow) or "ft" (for stage).

5. Enter appropriate numbers in the "Minimum Recommended Flow" and "Maximum Recommended Flow" (if appropriate) fields.

6. Click on "Add/Update", and you're done.

Lemme know how this works for you.

Thanks. I'll wait until I know what the acceptable minimum is. In the meantime, just to see if I know what I'm doing I plan to make something up and then take it back off until I'm sure of appropiate levels. Or perhaps I can add it has an educated guess and then put a notation of such? Last time there it was at 2.70 ft and it was a real srape fest. It's my guess that a mab 3.40 it would be a low but acceptable minimum but not sure.

I think it is reasonable to make an educated guess about the minimum acceptable flow. It will differ somewhat for different people anyway. Then add an explanation of how you came to that guess and asking for feedback. State that your estimate could be wrong.

Continuing refinements is the nice thing about an online guide. I just changed estimates of the high end on a reach, based on feedback. Really just added information about the risks of going in at a high flow on the reach. Added their trip report and added some qualifying statements.

OK, I give up. I tryed entering the AW ID number and that did not work. I tried looking it up in AW and the gage is listed so when I had the gage up, I went the address (URL) and right clicked the URL, then left clicked and clicked 'copy" then went back to the river and pasted it where I tried to put the AW ID#. That didnt work. Then I tried to just spell out the gage name, Round out cr above Red Brook at Peekamoose and that did not work. This is the creek i'm working on; [www.americanwhitewater.org]

All of those methods that you used to input the gauge should work. I just tried to look up your gauge and a few others tonight and the gauge drop down menu did not respond at all. Recent experience shows that if the drop down menu does not respond then it won't accept any input in any form. So it is nothing that you are doing wrong.

When the drop down menu is working properly, a range of options will appear as soon as you start typing even a few characters. Type in the name of the creek, Rondout, and any gauges on that creek should show up in the drop down menu. If nothing shows up, then the drop down menu is not working and giving up for awhile is the best option.

On a different note, it looked like the take-out coordinates are way off for that section. The maps show the take-out below a reservoir and all the way down on the Hudson River. Your shuttle directions indicate that the whole run is alongside Peekamoose road. Using the "map-it" mapping editor, you can scroll around, then zoom in and fine tune where you place the put in and take out markers.

JD,

I got it to work.

Instead of copy/pasting the entire URL of the gage, I just pasted the gage ID number. The AW gage URL is www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Gauge_detail_id_7510_. The ID number is that last four-digit (sometimes five-digit, butt not in this case) number. I typed 7510 in the Gauge ID field, clicked on the arrow at the right of the field, and it brought up Rondout above Red Brook. I didn't mess with the minimum (you've included enough disclaimers so that nobody should be misled), butt I did take the liberty to fix a couple typos.

Sorry this has been a bit of a pain. I'm sure it's been frustrating. Butt we now have a gage linked, and someday it'll be in the green...thanks to your efforts (and, duh, thanks to rain).

I would just like to reiterate item#3 from Matt's directions above:
3. When the interface gives you a few gauges to choose from, click on the gauge that you want to use, to select it.

That is, it does not seem to be sufficient to just enter the number of the gauge in the field and move on. YOU MUST CLICK THE GAUGE when it pops up!
