Virtual gage from retired USGS gages?
Posted by: skipmorris (IP Logged)

I'd like to create a virtual gage from two existing gages.

One is a standard USGS gage:
[waterdata.usgs.gov]

The other (and this is the problem) is a retired USGS gage which is now operated by the State of New Hampshire.

It generates all the right data, but can we interface to it?

So, if I understand the USGS gauge is broken on AW because it isn't maintained but NH took over funding and we don't have the data. The question is "Can we get the data?"?

So, I guess I'm confused.

The "broken" gage (actually retired from the USGS database) is AW gage #136.

Not sure what you mean "Can we get the data?"? The gage is available online from
the state of NH (link above). What else is needed to get the data? I can call the
state and ask, but I need to know what to ask for.

thanks

When you look on AW gauge #138 you do not see any data. This means that at present AW does not get that data. This is a problem in a lot of other states and other gauge systems as well, where gauges are not USGS.

We will get data from those other gauges eventually, but somebody with sufficient programming skills has to take the time to match up these other gauge types with the AW system. Each different system will be slightly different.

In the meantime, you can link to the two different gauges and report what calculation that you use to estimate flow on your river. What river section are you working on?

I'm working on Walker Brook (http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River_detail_id_5623_).

I've already added links for both gages to the flow tab. But what I'd really like to do is have the river show up in green on the state page when its running.

But from your explaination above, I guess its not possible until someone writes some code.

Gauge Updates are coming...

I expect to be able to offer non-USGS gauges February when I start coding the river pages update. Please add a link to the NH gauge in the bug tracker under the ticket titled adding non-USGS gauges.
