campsites on the Upper Cumberland

A good girlfriend of mine who lives in Denver is ditching her fiance and heading to the Cumberland River/BSF area with me for a canoe/backpacking trip this weekend. Girls gone wild. In the wild............

Anyway, I've never done the 28 mile section above the Falls and that's what we are gonna do. Can anyone (Foley??) recommend a sweet camping spot? I've never spent any time in a canoe so this could be interesting. How hard will it be to huck the Falls??

Hope everyone has great plans for the weekend. Thanks for any beta you can give me!

First, the highest putin above the Falls I would recommend is Redbird and even there the scenery for the first 5 miles is fairly bland, mud banks and river bottom farms. The first decent campsite downstream that I remember is at the mouth of Marsh Creek on river left and actually in the NF.

There is a bit of 4wheeler activity in this part of DBNF, so be aware of that possiblity.

The rapids are all wide ledgey shoals, the only rapid that could be considered anywhere near difficult is the one immediately above the bridge at the Cumberland Falls parking lot. I'm told that this run becomes a real pain once the water drops below 1000 cfs at Williamsburg, but I've never been on it that low.

Sheltowee runs a shuttle service on this section and I recommend using it so you don't leave a vehicle at Redbird. They will also arrange for the permit to leave your vehicle overnight at the Falls.

You can call me if you have specific questions.

Thanks Larry! We are using Sheltowee Trace Outfitters and we're already committed to the full 28 miles! Might have to drink some cold beverages to make the time fly.........

I'll look for that campsite.
