Hey Don
I didn't see either flip. Sorry, I wasn't paying attention :-( I assume you used your rock-solid roll both times?
On the side surf, did you flip during the surf, or while getting out of it? The usual thing for side surfing is getting flipped to the upstream side, because that's where your edge will be caught. I'd be surprised if you leaned too far downstream. If you are working your paddle on the downstream side, with an aggressive lean downstream, you should be fine. (I'm sticking my neck out here, but expect that B6, Hanley, or someone else will correct me if I am wrong).
On eddy turns, I have a habit of leaning way early, provided that I am traveling with the downstream current. The issue of current catching your edge doesn't really apply if there is no current flow RELATIVE to your boat. Again, not knowing the precise circumstances, I can only guess. But again, my guess would be that you didn't have a sufficient lean into the eddy, or didn't have your paddle in position. I think it helps to reach right into that eddy on the inside of your turn and aggressively pull the boat into the eddy.
It also helps to get into the eddy as high as possible. I usually make the mistake of entering it too low, and make a lot of work for myself to paddle up into it (or just get washed down farther). That's often because I am tentative about going into an eddy when others are already in it, or because I don't anticipate the eddy early enough and have a lot of paddling to do just to get to it. But Robert pointed out last week that the fact that the eddy line is much narrower at the top of the eddy makes it much easier and safer to drive across it there than farther down.
