I've launched from Shaker Landing before. Its free, but a pain too. Supposedly you need to sign a waiver at the village. The ramp is narrow because of the Dixie Belle equipment, and the times I've been there its incredibly muddy - they don't really use it as a ramp.

If you somehow have never been to High Bridge, make sure you check out the overlook before or after the TRR event. Just keep going straight under the railroad overpass, High Bridge Park is a couple of hundred feet beyond. There is a steel structure that cantilevers out over the cliff right by the pavilion that you can overlook the river. I'll attach a couple of pics, but they don't do it justice. In one is the Dix/Kentucky confluence, the other is the bridge.

They have a Homecoming Festival there this weekend if you are into that kind of thing.

More propaganda photos to try to get people to come out...

'3' is a photo approaching High Bridge with a train on it.
'4' is a photo right below the Herrington Dam spillway (not it picture) doubt we'd get this far
'5' is a photo of Shaker Landing with the Dixie Belle

Don,

Great photos. Very pretty.

? - is that photo below the Herrington Dam spillway the "rapid" that I hear folks talk about being up there? Is that the only one? If access was easier, that actually looks like a fun little place to practice attainments, eddies, ferries and such during the summer if it ran all the time and was easier to get to.

I assume so. That was as far as I got that day - was before I got into whitewater, and was in a 14.5' day touring kayak (since sold to my sister). People have told me if you portage around it, you get into a pool that goes all the way to the dam. Below it is the pool that goes all the way to the Kentucky.

I assume the roads near there are owned by the Utility Company. And its about 3 mi. from the boat ramps to there. Don't know if there are any other short cuts.

That is the only rapid. It's a really scenic paddle upstream to get there. Although it's "upstream," it is rather pool-like.

Going upstream, after the rapid, you can paddle pretty much up to the dam.

You might be able to park along the side, close to the dam at the top somewhere, but the hike down would be cumbersome. Might as well get the flat water workout paddling up the Dix, in my opinion.

Here are some high water pictures taken in October a couple of years ago.

1. scenic tributary coming in
2. where the rapids would be, they are underwater here though
3. dam!

Allen,

I'm making every effort I can to get down there this evening. I'm trying to arrange for someone to watch my little Butterbean for me so I can be there....

Sounds like we are going to have a great BWA turnout. I have copied an email I received from Nathan.

We are a go for our KY River/Dix River trip Thursday night. Being this
is a little longer paddle (5-6 miles) we will allow all time to be
towards paddling. It is nice, if we can get this far, to stop at a
really nice turn around spot on the trip, up on the Dix. It is one of
the most scenic areas in KY. Try to be there at 6:00, so we can get
right on the water. This is a public pay for boat launch, so donated
money will be paying for everyones launch.
Here are some directions:

To get there you go on 68 south towards Harrodsburg
Turn Left onto 29 towards Wilmore
Go through Wilmore, past Asbury college, staying on 29
Follow all the way to High Bridge itself.
Just before you go under HB, turn right onto Lock 7 Road
Follow down hill, and at bottom stay Right and you will see public boat
launch on the left,

I will do all I can to be there at 6:00. I may be just a few minutes
late, but I will be quick unloading.
Any idea on the amount of vets needing boats wold be awesome.

Thanks
Nathan

Unless someone wants to mow my grass for me while I'm gone this weekend, I'm going to have to do yard work before I leave town.

I was really hoping to make this.

All apologies.
