The fuzzy stuff was algae, at least thats what Sara Martin (our resident biologist) had to say about it. Notably, there wasn't any of it on the gorge section but the upper paddlers all mentioned it.

Hi Tim! I saw the same stuff and was told it was "algae bloom". Where did you guys camp?

Regarding the rock dumped by the railroad, I saw Terry Ratliff negotiate it yesterday, barefoot, to drop off his paddle that he broke, and said it sucked, but was doable to ambulate across.

Cannot believe the weather - in the 90's. Summer boating with decent release levels (800 plus a little on Sat, and 770 on Sunday). What an awesome weekend. Some first timers in the BWA got in the gorge this weekend: Kevin Hisle, Jonathan Dale and Wes Prince.

I can't wait for next weekend. I love the Russell Fork. We are going to paddle and do a work weekend, starting Friday. Clay Warren is bringing a Bobcat down Thursday night and he, Barry Grimes, Super Dave (I think) and others will be there on Friday leveling and spreading woodchips that we are getting FREE from over by Elkhorn School in Elkhorn City. The site for the BWA party is fabulous with a Pavilion and fire pit next to it for our use.

If you haven't seen the Breaks Gorge before, or haven't come over in a while, come check it out and let's throw some BIG BWA energy into this "Crown Jewel" of Kentucky. If we focus, who knows, maybe we can score some summer time releases.

Brent,

Thanks so much for taking it on to organize this event. What an incredible weekend. The gorge is definitely a magical place. I hope to make it down for the party, but I may be out of town for work the next few weekends. Hopefully it will work out.

Big props to Clay for showing some great lines that all worked great. Well, I guess other than Saturday at El Horrendo and Climax, sometimes I just don't follow instructions so well smiling smiley The video of my try at the race line would be very entertaining if it surfaces somewhere on the internet.

It was really amazing how everyone is willing to help others out. Seems like lots of places don't have quite the same vibe.

Thanks all,
Kevin

Yeah Kevin, thanks for coming over and enjoying this amazing river. The Big BWA presence was awesome. There was a huge BWA handprint on the weekend at Ratliff Hole. We rock ya'll. The music was great with kudos to Jeffro, Rock-n-Roll, Steve Ruth, Scott Wilmouth, and the awesome dude with the Bob Segar voice, along with Jeff K. and Hugo on drums, John Mello and djembe, vocalists Sarah and Kim, and just an awesome RF fire circle. Can't wait to do it again. Stars were so bright you could reach up and touch them. Saw a shooting star too! Crescent moon was beautiful. The leaves floating in the river. Wow!

Well the algae bloom is much better than some of the ideas that were proposed this Saturday on the water. One of them was TP. I only did a day trip as I need to get home for Emily's 18th birthday on Sunday. She turned 18 at 12:52pm this Sunday. Wow that makes me feel old. Oh Brian W. Kelly G. and Bruce F camped at the Breaks and said it was crowded. Lots of boaters. tim

Thanks Tim. It is good to have boater presence in the Park itself. How was it up there? Would you recommend it? Ratliff Hole is great for the BWA party crowd, but, the facilities are a bit lacking. A port a john would be preferred to the bathroom facility they have, although the hot shower is kinda nice. Need to bring good drinking water to Ratliff Hole. Are you going back this weekend?
