Don't do it, Bethany, don't do it! It's painful. And you'll become just like Frankenstein! (or Kris, or Don, or ...)

Actually, haven't you noticed how many half-shaft paddlers wear skirts?

Actually Chris, open boating is quite the comfort level. I've been open boating for about 30 years and have never experienced the least amount of pain. Not to mention the safety factor - a very quick exit in times of danger is very advantageous to one's safety. And I can roll the thing if I need to. Also, it's great for running over two-bladers when they get in your way trying to surf a wave.

The long and short of it of it is, it's like paddling an armchair. And the work-out to strenghten you upper body is unsurpassed by any other type of paddling.

So there. Stick it in your pipe and smoke it. . . . . .

All in good fun of course.

Geez, what rookies will assume when they don't have all the facts.

Hey Mike
What you say makes perfect sense, except...
I did try open boating at clinic, hence my comment about pain :-)
So now I am just envious of folks who can do that open canoe thing. There are many obvious advantages.

Don't be fooled Chris, otherwise this may be you:

Not a bad look as long as you hang out in doorways and stand in profile a lot.

I have gotten good stuff off Boater Talk. I checked and it looks like there is a fair selection of quality sounding skirts for under $100.

If you buy a used skirt (you probably know this) make sure you check the seams and make sure that they are not coming apart. I have had some trouble with the really thick rands (like on a seal skirt) cracking and breaking.

I have some skirts that are well used, but I would like to hang on to them.

What size tunnel do you need? I assume you need an XL keyhole for the Hero. I will look through the pile or keep an eye out. They had some $75 dollar ones at NOC 2 weekends ago. I would wholeheartedly recommend a Bomber skirt if you buy new.

The lady at skirtworks can get you a custom skirt in a week for $165 made by her own hands. Mine was nice.

Good luck!

E,

I'm actually looking for one to make a cockpit cover out of. I do need a XL key hole but the tunnel size makes no difference.

Nylon and some shock cord and you can make a bombproof cockpit cover. Need a little sewing skill though.

Jason: If the skirt is stretchy enough, you can use one for a standard whitewater cockpit. I have a snapdragon that I can fit on my superhero and my rocker. I won't part with it, though, since I use it for roll sessions. But I think if you can locate a snapdragon for a standard whitewater boat, it will work for you. But, wouldn't an off-the-shelf cockpit cover be cheaper? (or a used one_

Hanley: I have been doing just that, but maybe I've been turned the wrong way around, and everyone's been seeing my weak side grinning smiley
