Larry,

Great ideas! Number 3 reminds me of the initiation of the lottery in Kentucky and how the monies were to go for education but ended up in the general fund. Can we avoid that?

How about combining the funds and give out the 'scholarships' as from the BWA in memory of those members (name them) who have passed on? This may make it more attractive for future donations.

Again Guys, lets stay focused and keep it simple.

Dallas, the whole purpose of this discussion is to get rid of the earmarks. The Treasurer is a volunteer position and we really don't have the accounting to keep all these funds seperate. We have had the donation for Garten for nine years at least and keeping track of it seperately has really cost us. That's the why behind my suggestion, it establishes the memorial and I don't see any reason that we couldn't fund this perpetually. We spend more on beer on outings. If we get short on funds for it, I volunteer to buy my own beer.

Let's not get too involved in adding things to this either. As I proposed it, the Beginner Scholarship would include the membership like we do now, but I actually see the Safety Scholarship being for established BWA member. I think that the beginner scholarship recipent being nominated by a current member is a reasonable restriction and the 100 dollar max for the safety is both sustainable and reasonable. I wouldn't even get too hung up on what would be the qualifications and let the sitting steering committee decide.

If the long names are a bit too clunky, how about we just simplify if to The Garten Scholarship and
The Sanders Award?

I'll make these as a formal motion at the next meeting and maybe we can get this behind us.

I agree again that the idea is to do away with earmarks to avoid the "analysis paralysis" we have over what to do with them. As Fred astutely pointed out, when donations are made to Hospice, some charity, etc. it is understood that the Donee organization will use the money consistent with their organization objectives. Our (BWA) objectives are set out succinctly in our Handbook. Thus, donations to the BWA should be used consistent with those objectives anyway and it is therefore appropriate to put them in the general funds for our use. KISS. On the otherhand, it has been nice to have the "float" in our account when our projects lose money and times are tight. We weren't as concerned last year cause we had plenty of money. Now we don't...we need to do something. I would support Larry's motion at the next meeting.

Larry and everyone,
I think that this is a great idea and one that can be maintained over the years. I see no reason, provided that we include this in our budget, that the awards cannot be continued indefinitely. It is also very simple, requires no maintenance and is consistent with the goals of the club.

At the last meeting we decided to accept donations only with the understanding that they will be used at our discretion consistent with the objectives of the BWA listed on the first page of the handbook.

We explored ways to liberate the sequestered money that is currently earmarked and Larry's idea is outstanding in my opinion.

The idea, as was pointed out, is to get past the paralysis caused by earmarking. Say "Great idea", stop adding to it, and vote for it at the next meeting.

Brent and I actually agreeing on something makes this idea worthy of support smileys with beer

I'll formally propose this at the next meeting since there actually seems to be somewhat of a concensus on these ideas. I'll end my part of the discussion here so we don't get into the point of over debating the idea.

I like the idea of the scholarships for clinic or some sort of first aid training. I would add one more suggestion .... only students are eligible. They are generally in the most need of financial assistance.
