Well now, Griff was always very "safe" on the river in my experience. He very much carried on that old tradition of us ole hippy boaters. I was not at this SC meeting (first one I missed in a long time), but I am sure that is what they had in mind. Heck, why not. It is quite funny.

Brent,
You are giving us way too much credit for our cleverness. I see the irony / humor in the name of the award. I don't think we even gave the name a second thought.

Lol, Allen, well, it is better to be lucky than good then. Just funny as heck. I think Griff would find it hilarious.

I assure that the attempt at humor was purely freudian when I initially proposed this idea. smileys with beer

Regardless, I feel this is a very appropriate memorial. Griffin was well known for his sense of humor, and the promotion of safety and first aid is a good, life-affirming activity.

To facilitate this proposal, I want to make sure folks understand that this is the proposal the steering committee voted to present to the club for a yea or nay vote. If you feel that either proposal needs further modification before it is accepted, vote nay and we will re-hash it with club-recommended modifications in mind and present it again at the next meeting.

And, we got some time to hash it out here on the forum before the meeting next Tuesday, so I would encourage anyone with strong thoughts to go ahead and get them out here so we are better informed when we do vote on Tuesday. As it stands, despite the, and maybe because of the irony and humour and double meaning, and because I think Griff's mom particularly would like this as would his dad and siblings, I am inclined to support it. Be great to have gauges on cool creeks, or some plaque or event, but it ain't happening and this gets it done and is consistent with our organization objectives. KISS theory. The money was never earmarked when given, just given to the BWA was all. No one earmarks money when given to Hospice or Volunteers of America etc., so we should not worry too much. I think Larry's suggestion is a fine one and I probably would have voted at the SC to support it for that reason. But, now is the time to offer a concrete alternative plan with clear implementation or as the saying goes: "going, going, gone" and we should vote to follow the SC recommendation.

I don't really have a problem with the safety memorial thing for Griffin but since I do know that Griffin liked paddling Boone Creek and since Brent raises the issue I'll go ahead and bring up the alternative idea that John Mello first suggested of using some of the money to put a webcam gauge on Boone.

Getting a wireless web cam set up on Boone Creek to check the water levels would be cheap and I think very easy to do and would involve the following:

1) Permission to use the wireless internet network at Boone Creek Lodge.

2) An in creek gauge pole (or some other fixed, in creek visual marker)

3) Electric line

4) Cheap wireless webcam with integrated web server

5) Web hosting for the webcam viewing page

I have already talked to Burgess about this idea and he's all for it. The gauge pole could be placed in the pool that is at the bottom of the steps leading from Boone Creek Lodge. There is an electric line (for the lights on the steps) that is already run to the bottom of the steps. We could purchase a wireless web cam like this one: [tinyurl.com] We could use the BWA website to host the webcam feed and decorate the web page with memorial info about Griffin.

Any one else have thoughts about this idea? Should the BWA vote to go with a webcam gauge on Boone Creek I would gladly volunteer to help make it happen.

It's not a bad idea, I like it myself. I've liked it since the idea was first floated. There are a lot of good ideas floating around, but eventually we will have to settle on one. I would encourage you to show up at the meeting and vote nay if you think we should follow this plan instead.
