Earmarks, memorials ETC

As a response to the debate on Tuesday on the subject of earmarks and memorials, I would like to make three proposals trying to maintain the KISS principle.

1. I propose that we establish the Bueren Garten Memorial Beginners Clinic Scholarship and sponsor one worthy student, as determined by the steering committee, every year.

2. I propose that we establish the Griffin Sanders Memorial Safety Scholarship and sponsor one student a year in either SWR, CPR or First Aid, as determined by the steering committee.

3. That all funds be rolled into the General Fund.

I think these would be fitting permanent tributes to these individuals while helping to support the sport and the club.

Larry,

I think those are good ideas, simple and sound easy to maintain over time. I would suggest clarifying #2, covering the cost for those classes regardless of whether or not the classes were "provided by the BWA" ?

Just a thought smiling smiley

I'm willing to let that be determined by the steering committee. In reality, none of the safety courses that have been done are really BWA functions. The SWR is BWA sponsored, but an ACA course and instructors, and the same with WFA or even regular First Aid and CPR. I don't see it as a huge impediment that the courses be restricted to BWA sponsored events, however.

I'm just trying to keep is as simple as possible, Kris. cool smiley

You know Larry, I like that idea. We had talked about establishing some kind of scholarship before, but it was hard to see how it would be sustainable even in the short run. Sponsoring one person for the clinic every year and one person for a safety or first aid course every year is within the scope of the funds available to maintain for several years, thus giving the scholarship idea time to take hold and become part of the BWA traditions, thereby attracting broader support.

I would add one caveat. The recipients of the scholarships should be picked from a list of nominees submitted by the club members.

I didn't want to get too caught up in the details, but nominated by a current member would seem reasonable.

I would think that we would be able to keep these going as long as there was interest. The Clinic Scholarship cost us little except the food budget and insurance and with the exception of WFA, most of the other course are under 100 bucks. We could even set a limit for the safety scholarship if we wanted to allow it to go to an outside course. As an example, I wouldn't have a problem with someone using the money to pay for part of a Wilderness First Responder Course, although I don't think we have the funds to do a full ride. Maybe a limit of 100 is reasonable and certainly one that we should be able to sustain for awhile.

We're OK with the idea. Obviously the amount set aside for Beuren ( correct spelling ! ) will be used up after a few years, but that's OK with Patty & I.

Can someone come up with a name for the clinic scholarship in memory of Beuren Garten ?

Larry,

I like your idea here. I think this is a KISS solution that makes good sense and gets 'er done. I would support this unless someone has a better suggestion. If so, this would be a good time to offer one. Otherwise I would urge us to adopt this plan/approach. SYOTR,

Brent
