Thanks,
Cindy

Seems to me that whitewater and paddling sports should be on the agenda. Be nice if the BWA could do a presentation there. Pretty heavy on high impact eco tourism too (like ATVs), it seems.

I agree Brent. The attention to human powered outdoor activity in that workshop is sorely lacking and it appears that in E. KY, the concept of adventure tourism = ATV Disney World. I suppose that's another "use" for land already sacrificed via mountain top removal. Seems to me to simply be compounding one eco-disaster for another. I wonder if ATV advocate Lt. Governor Mongiardo is behind all these ATV centric ideas?

Don't forget that by "weaning ourselves off of oil" and thus utilizing more electricity, you are only supporting and creating a market for mountain top removal and the damming of our streams......as well as the ATV disneylands that in turn pollute our streams and air....and minds.

There's plenty of domestic oil out there.

Just sayin...........

There's plenty of sunshine out there, too, Wavey. Anyone who parks a few minutes on the blacktop near a mall can attest to that. Right?
Anyway, has anyone invited the Lt. Guv to go boating with us some time?

Wavey, the beauty of electricity is that it can be generated by a huge variety of sources. While it's true that our current use of electricity in KY means coal use and mt. top removal - it's also true that if the price of coal (aka: carbon) is raised to reflect the true cost of it's use and negative impact on the environment (something carbon cap and trade will do) then KY consumers will seek to develop and use alternative (and hopefully sustainable) means to generate it.

In the meantime, all of us in KY who give a spit about the environment can immediately begin to decrease our electricity use and impact on mt. top removal (and the associated destruction of mt. streams) by conserving electricity as much as possible. The simple act of turning off lights, dropping electric water heater temps and reducing standby power usage can collectively and significantly reduce demand for coal.

BTW, electricity rates in states that use coal to generate electricity are already dramatically increasing - even WITHOUT cap and trade in place - thanks to the previous DEREGULATION of the power industry. Here's some quotes about this situation that cap and trade opponents should read and although KY was not mentioned in the article it's sure to be experiencing the same story:

"Even if the meager Cap & Trade provisions included in the energy bill now under consideration by the US Senate were stricken, consumers in coal-dependent states would be facing serious electricity price increases.

Due to deregulatory decisions made years back - a future removal of the so-called rate cap - Pennsylvania anticipates a steep rate increase beginning in January 2010, in the range of 45% to 100% (depending on who is making the projection).

Electricity rates for most North Carolina customers could increase 50 – 100 percent if Duke Energy and Progress Energy proceed with plans for $35 – 40 billion in new utility-built power plants, according to a report released by the North Carolina Waste Awareness & Reduction Network (NC WARN).

West Virginia customers of American Electric Power subsidiaries Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power could see a 43 percent increase in their power bills over the course of the next three years.

Dominion Virginia Power customers saw their monthly power bills jump $16 in July 2008, after the State Corporation Commission approved an 18 percent rate increase. The rate hike is the largest one-time rate increase in three decades."

Forget all that, finally my skill at consuming beer can be turned into cheap electricity.

Sad but true, based on my observation of rural KY. You can live in a shack or POS trailer, have a car that barely runs, ... or up on blocks, kids running around in rags ...but by God you're gonna have a 4 wheeler! And you're going to haul your kids around on it too - without helmets of course. Yee Haw! It's unbelievable.
