I'm excited to announce the formation of my new boat company- Blackfly Canoes. Even if you're not a canoer, I hope you'll enjoy seeing something different being offered- and believe me, it's a good bit different from anything else currently available.

C-boaters .... I'm wondering ... what's the purpose of a boat like this over a modified kayak? I started in an open boat, and once I left the Blue Hole OCA, never looked back. I realize the new open designs are nothing like that boat, just like modern kayaks are nothing like my first kayak. But I'm still wondering, what's the purpose of having a large opening and stuffing a boat this small full of airbags over just having a large decked boat? Just to say you are paddling an open boat that's got to be much harder to roll than a decked C-boat? I don't get it.

1) Generally, we open-boaters prefer the bobbing wave-impact scenario that our blunted ends provide in bigger water. Conversely, My Atom slices too often through waves resulting in my hair getting wet. I like being on top.
2) I'm not fond of wearing a skirt either. It's one more thing to remember to take to the party, and it is difficult to get around my cockpit. I find going skirtless adds an additional component of excitement and pleasure.
3) Size matters: I like the additional saddle height which provides less cramping of the ankles and sharper down-river vision. I can paddle pain free longer.

My Descender Lite weighs less than my Atom.

4) My hip snap is more powerful sans skirt because I have a wider range of motion and room for foot braces.

5) I love being able to clip stuff to my webbing, rather than detach my skirt to retrieve items.

I'm really enjoying the video footage of Bart styling in his white boat.
Ciao, Keith
