Work Party March 8

As most of you that have paddled the Elkhorn recently know, the tornado of a few weeks ago left two downed trees that have proven to be "almost" hazards. We have been fortunate that no one has gotten hurt. I would like to see if anyone would be willing to meet Saturday morning and help remove these two hazards.

I would have as much reason as anyone to do in that tree, but unfortunately I'll be in Oklahoma sad smiley

Allen,

I'll be glad to help out but I'm going to be in a 'conceal and carry' class. I figure that since I'm packin' anyway, I may as well do it legally. However, after the class, I'll be glad to meet you and take care of business. I've even got the chainsaw and would like nothing better than to rip the shit out of a few tree limbs. I'm in.

By the way.............thank you, all of you for a great day on the Elkhorn. Chris, a swim is only a swim. What is important is that you are okay and that your attitude is likewise. Some of the lessons of life, and paddling, are not comfortable but you learn from them.

It was a great time and I have the pics to prove it. Y'all e-mail me, Kayak1ky@aol.com, and I'll be glad to send you what I have. Allen, I have a couple of really good ones of you. I also have some of Tim now that he has that bumper shaved off his upper lip.

Valerie, you are beautiful, inside and out. Ben should get up each morning and thank his God that he is your husband.

I am not allowed to use the chain saw anymore.

Not after last time.

My dear husband Paul, however, has volunteered to use said forbidden saw to cut tree on Saturday.

Be prepared for Irish engineering. What time?

After looking at the latest weather forecast, the high temp on Sat is supposed to be 39 deg. However, on Sunday the high is near 50 deg. I propose that we move the chainsaw party to Sunday and be at the takeout at 10:30 (I'm flexible on the time). Daylight Savings time starts this Sunday so we will have a little more daylight.

I will bring a grill and some hotdogs w / fixings to have at the takeout.

I may be able to help, but am not sure at this point.

I would recommend that you guys set up some kind of safety downstream, as this looks to be a pretty complicated effort. I would be happy to help out with the logistics for this - we can discuss it either at the Steering Committee meeting or at the NPFF Wrap-up meeting.

Thanks Allen for stirring this up. I agree with Todd, though. If the creek is up, it will be tricky. I would like to help, but this weekend may be a problem for me too. I will see if I can juggle things. It seems to be a bigger problem when it is running at this 800-900 cfs level. Higher water the other routes open up and it is easier to ferry in front of if you want to do that. It would be best to do this work if the creek got really low. But, where there is a will there is a way. Organize and the will and way should present itself. Thanks buddy.

So, in order to do this, the crew is going to paddle down the creek with a chainsaw in a boat? Or are you hiking to the spot? I'm just trying to visualize... Then once you get there you'll cut while sitting in your boat? If that's the same spot that almost strained me last trip I recall it was several feet out over the water from an island?

OK everybody, great experience in positive enforcement !!

Sockeye and I will drive down to COLSTON's lane and take his chainsaw today. If we can't get the bigger trunk at this water level, we'll get what we can. It Will be better to do a low water, so it may be Sunday to finish the job.

I'll post here.

And BTW, Colston's lane is not an official access point and going down there you must be very careful about parking and getting off of the dead-end road.

Ellizabeth, I'd get my open boat and go with you but it's TOO WINDY for an open boat; Yes, it does resemble sailing in a way. . . . . . . .

Mike

P. S. Colston's lane can be found on a map and disregard the 1ST ONLY no trespassing sign you see, as the paved part is county road.
