Sarah, can you send me an email so I can get you on the list? I will send you all the details/costs/etc tonight after the steering committee meeting.

Thanks!

I am not sure if Larry has already passed this info a long but it is extremely helpful if everyone could please learn how to tie the following knots before the clinic.

Figure 8 family of knots: Figure 8, figure 8 on a bight, trace 8 both as a loop and a bend,
Bowline
Double fisherman's bend
Prussik knot
water knot in webbing (also practice the figure 8 in webbing)

This is a great link to animated guides for tying these knots:

If anyone has any questions about these just let one of us know.

Looking forward to the course

Sorry for any confusion

(Hanley, just back from vacation)

Speaking of knots...

All this discussion about throw ropes feeds into an idea I had been toying with. The idea was to have a basic informal rope instruction sessinn at 6:30 PM next Tuesday in Sontino's parking lot before the meeting. I tend to agree with Dale that simply sticking a rope in your boat isn't enough, you should know how to use it. That being said, you don't have to have an entire swiftwater rescue course to qualify you to use a rope, just some basic information. I have several ropes and will bring them all. Who would like to be involved in this?

I suggest that we plan on doing this. We'll combine throw rope basics with knots. I'd like to add a trucker's hitch and butterfly hitch to that list of knots, but I'll defer to the parties running the SWR class on that since the most basic knots are the ones you should learn first.

As far as carrying a rope, I try to always carry a rope, even in my squirtboat. I find that as long as the rope is in the center of the boat the weight doesn't really affect performance in any noticeable way.

What about doing this before a roll session? It seems like there would be more room and a little more time since the sessions don't start until 8 p.m.

Just a thought.........

And...some people tend to start "celebrating" the monthly meetings a bit early in the evening...I vote for roll session. Alcohol and ropes dont always mix...well, maybe sometimes...

Hanley: That is a good idea! Let's do it. I can be there at 6:30 in the parking lot. And, we should do it also, as Bethany suggests, around roll session time. The more the merrier. Why not? I appreciate boaters with ropes that know how to use them. Since I am still boatin, I know I am in between swims and my swims are generally on something where, "yes, please throw a rope", would seem to be in order! lol

I am unsure I will be able to help out since I dont know whether or 'knot' I will be back from SC/NC by meeting time. Hanley I think this is a great idea and if I can make it I will bring 4-5 throw ropes and some cording as well. The trucker, butterfly and munter hitch (used with a caribiner) are nice additions but we wont go into them much in the course.

The trucker is an important knot since I know a lot of folks who dont use tie down straps as well as they can hitch boats down on racks with the trucker.

I applaud the enthusiasm that appears to be mounting for this class. I can promise everyone will learn a lot and take it with them on the river later as well.
