Horse Trails May Affect Chattooga Scenery

In February 2002, American Whitewater submitted comments on the proposed horse trail modifications on the Chattooga River near Rocky Gap.

American Whitewater is concerned about this project based on the USFS proposal to alter the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River through the addition of foreign substances and through the use of motorized equipment. The agency is proposing to add gravel that is not native to the region, is jagged, and is off-color. The gravel will make its way into the river through natural erosion and the visual impacts of this litter throughout the Chattooga River are unacceptable. American Whitewater's Comments (39KB PDF File) support local river runner Bruce Hare's recommendations for protecting the natural integrity of the environment during the trail modifications.
