| Account | The Toilet Bowl starts out with this ledge known as Entrance Exam. The drop is recognized as the first major horizon line with bedrock walls rising up on either side of the river and comes after a few warm-up rapids and about 7 miles downstream of the Prairie Creek confluence. After running Entrance Exam the river squeezes through a narrow gorge and opens up to reveal the second half of Toilet Bowl. The action tapers off after running Toilet Bowl but then begins to pick up again within a couple miles to reveal several miles of continuous class III/IV whitewater. Most of the rapids in the Sluice Box are read and run but there are a couple where you might want to pull out for a quick look. There is a fun surfing wave at the confluence with Disappointment Creek. There are a few more class III rapids as you continue downstream, but that marks the end of the whitewater. Once you leave the canyon behind the river takes on the characteristics of a large floodplain river that meanders across the landscape and cuts a path between several islands. Use caution as cottonwoods create wood hazards and jet boats travel up and down the river. The view upstream towards the railroad bridge from a gravel bar at the end of Main Street in Talkeetna. This is one alternative take-out that is convenient for kayakers and lcoated on the downstream river left side of the railroad bridge. Rafters or those desiring a boat ramp should use the access on the upstream river left side of the railroad bridge. |
