| Account | The White Salmon joins the Columbia at the Bonneville Pool formed by Bonneville Dam. This area is known as an In Lieu site for use by the tribes and is part of the mitigation provided to the tribes for inundation of their accustomed fishing sites with the creation of the reservoir. The Highway 14 bridge and railroad bridge cross the river as it joins the Columbia. Mt. Hood is visible in the distance. Condit Dam on the White Salmon is an outdated dam scheduled for removal. Modernizing and repairing the dam to meet current safety and environmental standards would cost more than removal. AW joined a coalition of groups and signed a Settlement with the dam's owner, PacificCorp, and other parties outlining a plan for dam removal that will restore this river and its historic salmon runs. This is the river canyon located downstream of the powerhouse. Currently access is limited but local paddlers have been down to explore this section of the river. Removal of Condit Dam will expose the treasures that lie beneath Northwestern Reservoir. |
