Big Hungry confluence

| Account | This is Mike Nail's photo of the confluence with Big Hungry Creek, the Green's major tributary. The photo was taken from a kayak in the middle of the Green side, with Big Hungry coming in from the left and "delivering the brown". Following overnight rains (don't know how much, the AFWS Dana gauge was broken), Big Hungry was feeding in most of the sediment in this situation. Depending where the rains fall in the watershed, however, and what kind of crappy-ass development is going on upstream in any given month, the "line" can be reversed, with Big Hungry looking cleaner than the Green at the confluence. It turns out that during the 2004 floods (September, three hurricanes), a plug in the penstock of the upper dam on Big Hungry was dislodged and this allowed the sediment load behind the dam to be scoured down following each successive major rain event. This may well explain the large increase in sediment coming from the Big Hungry side of things, instead of "unknown upstream development". Apparently, the Justice family operated a floodplain sand-mining operation upstream of this dam some 30-40 years ago, adding to this idea being a potential current source.
