Kayak Surfing the Wave

Report

Account Chris Matulis, 25, took off from work early Wednesday and drove in from Kalamazoo to surf the Red Cedar River with his brothers Mike and Joe. "When the surf's up you've got to go, right?" said Mike Matulis. Joe Matulis, 25, a teacher in St. Johns, jumps into the Red Cedar River behind the MSU Administration Building Wednesday to surf the white water rapids. The recent flooding created a standing wave just feet from the shore. "It's so close you just walk out and jump on it," said Mike Matulis, his brother. Joe Matulis, 25, swims into a 2-foot standing wave in the Red Cedar River behind the MSU Administration Building Wednesday evening. This week's flooding turned that area of the river into white water. A small crowd formed on the banks of the Red Cedar River Wednesday to watch Joe Matulis, 25, a teacher in St. Johns, and his brothers Chris and Mike, surf the flood-swollen waters. Mike Matulis, 32, watches from shore as unidentified rafters barrel down the Red Cedar River behind the MSU Administration Building Wednesday evening. This week's flooding turned that area of the river into white water.
