River Description

Lat/Longitude data are very approximate.

Drawdowns of Mascoma Lake likely make this section runnable in the fall. For some hairy stuff, check out the Downtown section.

I was scouting the lower part of the Mascoma yesterday, near where it splits into 2just before the riverside Grill restaurant and saw a large tree blocking the usual passage going right. this is going to be impassable at most paddling levels and will need to be walked around or bypassed by taking the left channel whose status wrt trees I am not sure. also, with the heavy recent rains, there are sure to be more trees down in the upper reaches; so anyone going on it should take care. If I paddle/scout it soon and see anything, I will post.

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

The United State Geologic Survey discontinued reporting flow and stage levels at their gage station located at the Mascoma Lake out flow.  The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services took over the gage shortly thereafter and started posting information at their site.  Click Here.

The only reason I put a maximum level in is because of strainers on the banks. The actual difficulty of the whitewater does not change much (just a little pushier and fewer rocks).

On August 28th, 2011 Hurricane Irene struck New England. The resulting floods caused extensive
damage throughout the region, the worst in over 100 years. More than half the rivers in Vermont and
northern New Hampshire recorded their highest flow levels ever. Many roads, guardrails, power
lines, bridges, trees and other debris now litter several rivers throughout the region. River beds
have been scoured and changed course, many new strainers make navigation problematic at best and
downright dangerous at worse. Please realize that the river description you see here may not match
current situation after the floods. Use common sense and when in doubt scout especially on blind
drops. Also, if you run this river in the next year or so please comment on its navigability, even
if there are no problems this will be very helpful. Please report any new strainers or changes to
the rapids that will impact future boating. Thank you,

The high waters on the Scoma right now mean some of the slalom course wires set up at lower water
may become a hazard. Definitely scout the slalom course stretch under the covered bridge before
running it at these high levels.

As of 4/3/11, there's dangerous wood on the right after the last rapid (Excelsior). It can be
skirted on the left or the right, but for beginners or swimmers it could be dangerous. Be careful.
