This upper section of the Clavey is reported to be a classic section and significantly easier than the lower section. However, the road to the lower bridge can be in very poor condition so driving shuttle can be epic. Many boaters paddle both the upper and lower sections and then paddle out on the main Tuolumne. Some boaters camp at the lower bridge while some paddle both upper and lower sections in one long day.

Fred Norquist trip report from 2009
Optimum flows are reported to be around 500 to 800 cfs at the put in. Three miles downstream, Reed Creek will add another 150 to 300 cfs. These may be visual estimates only and not based on gauge readings.
There is a staff gauge just downstream of the put in which is only visible as you float by. There are no functioning realtime gauges on the Clavey at present. Dreamflows estimates flow during late spring and summer based on historical relationships between Clavey and other nearby gauges.
You can also compute a rough estimate of Clavey flow at the Tuolumne confluence. Find the daily inflow to New Don Pedro, subtract the flow of the Tuolumne at Meral's Pool then multiply by 6/10. (Inflow to Don Pedro) - (Merals Pool)]*(0.6)= Clavey at confluence. (formula is courtesy Clavey Coalition Noah)

There were two historical gauges on the Clavey River, plus a gauge on Reed Creek.

This gauge was operational from 1986 to 1994 and was located close to the put in, at an elevation of 5,160 feet above sea level. The staff gauge visible below the put in is probably from this historical gauge. You can estimate flow in cfs from the gage height reading. The Field Measurements page compares some sporadic gage heights with cfs.
