River Description
An anonymous contributor provides (2009-03-07):
This is usually broken up into three runs. The upper-IV to IV+, the middle-III to IV- and the
gorge or lower new-V. Make sure you don't put on the lower when flows are high or rising. You
have to paddle 5 miles before getting to any drops from put in so there is time for it to rise a
lot before you get there. At high flows people have slept in snow...brrrrrr! Many of these drops
are very difficult to portage and a few are impossible. If in doubt about the Gorge, the upper is
much friendlier and still offers good Salmon River(California) like rapids. Then again, if your
ready, the gorge is as close to Sierra classics as your gonna get around here without a ten hour
drive and well worth it. The character is quite clean and granitic for the region and the views
are immaculate. As far as the Denny run goes, your better off going somewhere closer to where
ever your driving from. It's a pretty run of the mill boulder garden class III with the
occasional playspot. if it's flowing so is a lot of other stuff.
