River Description

Boulder gardens and a couple ledges make a fun run at high water. Mostly, action is pretty sparse until the river takes a big bend near Hwy.73 (where Jack Creek / Cunningham Creek meets this reach). At this point a significant ledge can provide some play. A fine dells/rapids (rocky walls) finishes the reach just below Hwy 95.

(Note: Observations and 'minimums' based on only one run at 1290cfs.)

Following is a YouTube video which (I'm quite certain) shows someone canoeing down the most significant ledge/drop on this reach.

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

Listed minimum is for 'experienced' whitewater boaters. The reach is floatable much lower, but will generally be (again, for experienced whitewater boaters) a tame 'rock-dodge' run. (This may cause canoeists who are not experienced in whitewater, or boaters who do not have appropriate whitewater craft, to consider this reach very difficult and near scary at most water levels!)

Gauge/flow analysis based on data from 1963-10-01 to 2008-05-11

Maximum mean daily flow during stated period 24,900 cfs (1979.04.25)
10/90 ratio ('flashy-ness')
(under 3 is fairly steady, over 10 is quite 'flashy')
26.1
Average days per year over recommended 'low' threshold  46
Average days per year over recommended 'high' threshold  5

Offseason ('Ice') gauge conversions:

750 -1200 cfs med runnable-a bit pushy runnable II+(III) Perhaps 'optimum' flows for good intermediate whitewater paddlers. Will be pushy (scary/dangerous) for less experienced paddlers.
1200 -6000 cfs a bit pushy runnable-high runnable II-III+ High, pushy, big, flushy, with waves and wavetrains. Strong, experienced paddlers may find fun.
6000 -20000 cfs somewhat High-somewhat High II-III+ Unusually high flows. Expert whitewater paddlers may find waves/wave-trains entertaining. All others are urged to refrain from paddling this section at these f
20000 -50000 cfs somewhat High-extremely High III+(IV) Flood level flows. Huge, pushy, likely mobile strainers (floating branches and whole trees). Utmost caution is urged for anyone running at these flows.

I run an abbreviation of this reach anytime it's over 250 cfs. 250 is minimum and a couple spots
can be tricky/frustrating but definitely runnable. Between 750 and 1200 seems best with lots of
"textbook" features developing. 1250 is mostly washout haystacks. I have never run it above 1250
nor beyond hwy 95.
