Disclaimer

Rte. 1 (4.5 miles NW of Finland) to Finland (5 miles)

Usual Difficulty II-III (for normal flows)
Length 5 Miles
Avg. Gradient 71 fpm

River Description

Short road-side carry in.
The first mile (to Crown Creek confluence) is very narrow and fast with few eddies. This is short boat, technical maneuvering, rock dance water. While the rapids do not break above class II, boaters must have sufficient skills to react quickly and catch small eddies in this tight, technical water.

A trail bridge in this section acts as an impassable strainer (mandatory portage). Strainers have otherwise seldom been a problem, since generally the banks are lined with alder, making 'brush-bashing' a more frequent concern.
This reach makes a likely extension for a run on the upper Baptism.

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

Visual, at put-in.
Or, general correspondence to main Baptism stage marker. Historically, levels above 2.6' on that marker would be indication for this reach being (possibly) runnable.
However, as of Spring of 2009, boaters are reporting that gauge seems to have changed. Now, look for levels 3.3' or higher.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources appears to be taking stage readings at this site. Reportedly, 12.5' on their gauge correlates to 2.5' on the old stick gauge. MDNR data is available at DNR Gauge You can use a pull-down list on the graph (and hit the 'Change' button) to get the flow (CFS) values. For what it's worth, 12.1' is about 200 cfs, and 12.3' is about 250 cfs. Obviously, flow in this upper reach will be substantially less than gauge reading.

Area boaters are reporting that the gauge appears to have changed (Spring, 2009). While formerly
levels of 2.6' (plus or minus about 0.3') were 'optimal', now you should be looking for 3.3' (plus
or minus about 0.3'). There is also apparently some controversy about whether the reports from the
DNR are accurate.
