Pleasant canoe/beginner-kayak trip; Fairly continuous rock-garden rapids.
Listed put-in is carry-in from the second 90 degree turn (which turns to the left) after the
second Cty E bridge over the New Wood when coming in from the south. The run could be lengthened
by starting from the third Cty E bridge, yielding a run of 8.9 miles with an average gradient of
13'/mile. The first 5 miles of this is primarily quietwater.
This is likely to be done as a 'companion' run along with other short runs in the area, such as the Copper, Pine Dells, Prairie Dells, Trappe, and so on.
Visual from one of the Cty E bridges. Needs elevated flows in the area.
*Cited gauge is for the Prairie River, which lies about 10 miles to the East. At it's gauge, the Prairie is 184 square miles. At the put-in, the New Wood is 82 square miles. Thus, one should expect flows on the New Wood to be just a tad shy of half the gauge readings for the Prairie. Correlation should be pretty good, but is not assured.
"Minimum recommended" and "Maximum recommended" flows have been set quite tentatively, based upon one run years back, at nominal flows. Below minimum, the run will be quite a scrape. Above 'maximum' the river will still be very runnable, but is likely to be little more than a fast flush of wavy water with no real rapids. (However, that is purely conjecture -- again, I have only run it once, at nominal flow.)

Flows on New Wood are likely about half reference gauge on Prairie. |
