River Description

The putin is at the hwy 49 bridge on the Spartanburg County side of of the river. The only whitewater on the section is the first .50 miles or so after the putin. It is basically a long shoals with numerous drops. After the first .50 it is all flatwater to Hwy.56. It is a nice flatwater paddle. The hill area on the Spartanburg side of the river was one of the nicest hardwood forests in the area until it was clearcut 8 -10 years ago. It is starting to grow backbut that will take years. This is a good comb-whitewater/flatwater cruise section.

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

I have only paddled this section once. You probably just need to sight it from the putin. The whitewater starts pretty much immediately. You can see if it is too low or too high right where you put in. I definitely would avoid the section if it has been dry for awhile. The flatwater would be passable, but you are going to be really scraping over the shoals.

A group of friends and I ran the river on MLK day, our speacial tribute, it was a good first time
run and there were good rapids at different points of the river. Long stretchs of flatwater. The
warrior creek put in is a little dangerous the owners of the land creek left don't like
"trespassers".

A fun put in option is to use Warrior Creek on SC route 49.

This section is mostly flatwater except the first 1/3 of a mile or so at the put in. The start is
at the Hwy. 49 bridge in Laurens County is a set of long shoals. There was an old mill on river left
near the end of the rapids. You can still see some of the remains. The rapids are basically class
two and similar to some of the shoal rapids found on the Tyger River in the confluence area of the
North and South Tyger to the Hwy. 50 bridge. Once you are past the first 1/3 of a mile or so it is
a nice basically undisturbed flatwater paddle until you get to the Hwy. 56 bridge. There is a golf
course on river left just past the hwy. 56 bridge.
