Too low for any whitewater? (We need your input to more fully characterize what happens at different flows. Add a comment or report!) Gauge (844 sq.mi. drainage) is about 5 miles upstream (with only minor tribs intervening) so should very accurately reflect flows here.

River Description

Quick Facts:
Location: Central Iowa, approximately 5 miles due South from Webster City.
Shuttle Length: N/A miles. (See details in "Directions" Tab.)
Character: Aging broken out dam provides various waves/holes for 'paddle-up and play' boating.

General Overview

"Mike" wrote in Boater Talk, "there is on old dam type structure ... that turns into a great hole(s) ... A little shallow ... it is river wide with many breaks in it for easy outs. It is so old, it looks like a natural feature in terms of variations of the holes."

David Weber says, in Boater Talk, "The spot is about a 20-minute paddle upstream (0.5 mile NorthWest) from that bridge ... on the river right side of the first large island you get to."

This is just 3.7 miles (as the crow flies) away from Briggs Woods Spillway, so (when it's running) could be a 'two-fer' or each a 'back-up' plan for the other.

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

Unsure of Min/'optimum'/Max levels. Since you (generally) have paddle upstream a half-mile to get to this spot, the higher the flow, the more of a problem that will be.
Anyone familiar with the reach is requested to provide input via the "Add a Comment" button on the 'Comments' tab.

Ande Meyer provides (2009-03-19):
I paddled this thing at 1250 cfs and it was a lot of fun. There was a nice balance between the current one has to paddle against to get there versus the reward enjoyed upon arrival.

Gauge/flow analysis
(based on 20 years of USGS data, 1989.05.04-2009.05.03)

The wave on the river-right side of the island is a lot of fun at 1250 cfs and it is not too hard
to paddle up from the bridge at that level. AMeyer. Edit
