River Description

Claimed as a possible first descent by Stephen Hunt and Chris Polzin on January 19, 2001. He says the Caney Fork was over the top of the gage (maybe 3.5-4.0 feet).

Stephen further says:

Hazards: The first Major Rapid looks innocuous from upstream, but scouting reveals a downed tree toward the bottom jammed into an undercut that blocks most of the creek and would likely be terminal if blundered into. We'll probably try to remove it this summer (NOT the undercut).

Cool, glad someone else finally got in there! How'd you like that last big drop? When we ran Clifty
in 2001, the Caney was like the ocean: Pretty wide-eyed run at that level, but I bet we were at
Scotts Gulf road in 15 minutes.

Ran Clifty 4/15/09 with Caney at 3.1 and rising. Collins was up to 6g and calfkiller was 2500,
Daddy's was 1000 and rising. The creek was dropping and looked like it had been much higher earlier
in the day. This 'medium low' level was perfect - not too shallow on slides but we could stop and
'wheel-chair' up to drops and walk around at water level. The end of the 'log in the sieve' was
just above the surface and with just a few side-channel/sneaks we found routes to run whole way
down. Would not be fun much lower due to braided channels and sieves that filled in. Probably
runnable often when Caney Fork is on the way UP and the rain was very recent. There are 4 trees in
rapids we ducked, but with a little work this run will be a great little addition to the region
that I'll come back to again. Cut a few deadfalls, add a bit more water, and it's a solid mile of
class 3-5 plateau creeking into a big water romp down the Caney Fork. CW
