FUN FACT: A hike-in wilderness run.
SEASON: Snowmelt. Usually June.
LOGISTICS: From I-90 take exit 80 and head for Rosyln/Salmon La Sac (those arriving from the east can take exit 84). From I-90 it is 20 miles to the Salmon La Sac campground (most of the way on hwy. 903). Cross the Cle Elum bridge that leads into the campground and park upstream river right of the bridge. The take-out is here on the Cle Elum. To reach the put-in hike up Waptus Lake Trail from the trailhead at Salmon La Sac until you reach the river.
DESCRIPTION: See Mark Johnson's description in Bennett. The Waptus joins the Cle Elum upstream of China Point for approximately a mile of whitewater through the end of the Cle Elum China Gorge.
Lat/Long approximate.
The Teanaway River at Forks is maintained by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's Yakima Project. Inflow to Cle Elum reservoir is not currently gauged, but the Teanaway is the next drainage to the east and can give you an indication of flows in the area. The Waptus should be good between 250 and 700 cfs on the Teanaway gauge (this is based on only a couple data points--post a comment if you have additional information). The closest USGS gauge is the Wenatchee at Peshastin. Look for flows of 6000-9000 cfs on this gauge.
