One of the most dangerously undercut runs falling off of Waldens Ridge.
From Mark Cumnock:
Soddy Creek
Soddy Creek can be run when the Chick is high, BUT BEWARE it is
probably the most dangerous run on the Ridge; it seems everything is undercut. Even the fun
rapids have penalty points, and the mentality on the this run is “not if, but when.”
Soddy can also be run VERY LOW--the undercuts are more exposed, but when others aren’t
running this one will be. If it looks boney at the take out, you can still run it. A strong group
with rescue skills is needed for this run. You need more that a throw bag to be safe. I always
liked a strong group that you could count on. This is a good one to be in the mindset where
it’s okay to walk some, get the run dialed in first then come back. Memorizing the lines on
this one is very helpful. Did I mention it was undercut? Think Fist on the Russell Fork, and you
get the idea.

The Big Soddy gauge is located on the Back Valley Rd. bridge at the takeout. A reasonable minimum is 4'. Runs when N. Chick is high (400 cfs or more).

This is a gauge on another creek in the watershed. Use it as a guide to whether Soddy might be running, then check the physical gauge at the Soddy takeout. |

around 400 cfs. Plenty of water, I'd say it runs more than the north chick, very channelized where
the rapids are, of which there are many. Technical precision mandatory. It is VERY dangerous, but
also really scenic, decent water quality, plenty of action, runs alot, classic other than the
pucker factor. We will be back again and again.

Soddy -4-5 (5.1) good when higher, gauge on bridge at take-out, good when N. Chick is good. One big
stupid ledge-hole with undercut - set rope river left or portage. Forget the name.
and Woodcock creeks. The Big Soddy gauge is located on the Back Valley rd. bridge at the takeout.
The Falling Water gauge is on the first bridge upstream of old Hwy 27. The Woodcock gauge is on the
first road bridge upstream of Hwy. 127. There is no info yet on how these gauges coorelate to
levels. "
