The Ramey Fork is also located in the heart of the Jefferson National Forest, which is being threatened by heavy logging practices. One of the headwater streams for the Ramey Fork flows right through a disgusting timber cut.
The Ramey Fork has changed up a bit due to the flooding over the last couple of years. A decent portion of it is very sketchy now, two sieves have opened up and there is no clear way around them. There have been some changes in the smaller rapids as well. Not to mention some of the lumber. The pool at the bottom of the big drop looks as if it has gotten shallower.
The run should be scouted well before any attempt at running it.
Look for the Powell River @ Big Stone Gap to be running 1500 cfs and rising.
Another good indication is the Automatic Flood Warning System. Check this at Automated Flood Warning System.
Look at station 1059. During the fall/winter/spring months look for 1.5"+ of rainfall for the run to have water. During summer months look for upward of 2" of rainfall for a run.
