shortie but goodie. the highwater of the 03 season shifted some rocks in the chute, changing it a bit, and also washed out the classic hole below the chute.

Gauge Description:

the best gauge to check is the "dowd stick" gauge, a wood plank located at the top of the chute, just downstream of the confluence of the eagle and gore creek. pull-off highway 6 near the dowd junction I-70 interchange to peer down into the chute and to see the stick.

the difficulty of the chute varies with flow and roughly correlates to the following:

flow at avon (dowd stick reading) - class
? (< 2'-6") - III+
? (2'-6" to 4') - IV
? (4') - IV+
2000 (6') - IV++ (class V- skills)

I believe the gauges have been mixed up for this section (Dowd Chute) and the Gilman Gorge. This
section is below Gilman gorge which starts at red cliff, yet it is reading less water....hmmm I
think I fixed it, but now the ranges are messed up...If the stream keeper sees this post, could you
please take a look at it? The Redcliff gauge should be used for the Gilman Gorge section...and the
Minturn Gauge should be used for the Dowd chute section.
