River Description

This run begins as a small class III run just below the Hwy 18 bridge. This section is narrow and shallow and very prone to collection of wood. You should expect to get out a few times and portage, so be careful not to commit beyond what you can see is clear.

The banks are lined with houses much like the middle portion of the Preston to Falls City run. There are few rapids as well defined as Cheesegrater or the Canyon on the lower run, but there are few noticebly steeper sections, including a 2-foot boulder ledge.

Logistics

To reach the putin for this run, return to eastbound I-90 and take the Hwy 18 exit. Driving south on Hwy 18 you'll encounter a bridge over the Raging roughly 1 mile south of the Hwy 18 - I-90 interchange. Park on the right south of the bridge, and walk down to the river. There is a gate here, and the road splits just beyond the gate -- bear right. It's a five minute carry to the river.

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

The Raging is a rainy season run. It generally requires a couple of days of good rain for the flows to get to runnable levels.

Runnable flows may range beyond the recommended flows, however the first mile would be very low below 600 cfs. Also, higher water will significantly increase the serverity of wood hazards.

We put in at a friends house near the end of the Upper Preston Road. You could put in at the
bridge. Deep creek and another stream enter here adding to the flow. Still at 334 on the gauge it
was very low. We encountered a few log jams so watch out. The only really bad spot was where the
river split into three channels going right. The first two were blocked and the third had an even
worse log I portaged over. The IK got frequently on rocks but, I bounced over the rocks. The
steepest and most fun part was under a suspension footbridge.
