River Description
Lat/Longitude data are
very approximate.
When the water is high, above 8000 cfs on the USGS reading at Calder, Idaho, this is a fun class
III-IV run. At any runnable level, it is beautiful, and a nice diversion from the more popular
runs. The campgrounds are well maintained, and access is primarily paved. The whole run can be
scouted from the road. Be sure to take a look at Tumbledown Falls. Best access is from St Regis,
Mt., over Little Joe-Gold Cr. Pass. This can be snowed in until June, so be sure to call the Forest
Service, or ask locals in St Regis. Other possible accesses are from St Maries, Idaho on the St Joe
River Road, and from Wallace, Idaho over Moon Pass. While you are in the area, take a drive up
scenic Bluff Cr., and check out the trails system. A one half inch to the mile USFS map will be
helpful.
