River Description

Location: near Cooperstown, about midway between Green Bay and Two Rivers.
Shuttle Length: 2.9 miles. (See details in "Directions" Tab.)
Character: Small, rural, midwest stream.

Put-in is approximately 731' elevation.
Take-out is approximately 676' elevation.
Thus total elevation change is approximately 55'.

There is some confusion regarding the name of this creek. Most maps have it labelled 'Black Creek', but maps.google.com labels it 'Buck Creek'. In any event, it is small, but has sufficient watershed (around 15 sq.mi.) to be runnable under the right conditions. Gradient is not steep, but is sufficient for rapids and swifts. The creek does encounter areas where novice boaters will be entertained. However, since it is so small (thus will not regularly 'flush' deadfall), expect there to be plenty of deadfall and snags to maneuver.

In the rare event that someone boats this creek, they are likely to continue downstream (of the listed take-out of this reach) on the Neshota/West Twin run.

Note: HUC has been 'fudged' (to 04040003 rather than 04030101) to allow this reach to sort into the "Southwestern Lake Michigan" drainage rather than the already overlarge "Northwestern Lake Michigan" drainage. If this causes anyone trouble or concern, post a note in the "Comments" tab.

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

*The USGS reference gauge being used is for Bower Creek. With a watershed on the order of 15 square miles at the put-in for the listed run, this compares almost directly to the watershed of both Bower and Baird Creeks in Green Bay. However, correlation of runnable ranges are not assured. As with any 'reference gauge' (on a different river), expect there to be 'false reads' of runnability.

This will be runnable only rarely, at the peak of snowmelt or immediately after significant rainfall in the area.

We have no known visual or 'boaters' gauge, so you will have to rely on visual inspection at put-in to decide if it's a 'go' or 'no go'.
