River Description

Put-in at Swimming Hole Ck.Campground on River Rd 8 miles W of town of Rock.

Take-out is at boat landing on river right as you encounter Boney Falls Basin (flowage behind dam).

River is generally wide, open channel with fast current and some standing waves (at increasingly higher levels). (There are NO significant obstructions and NO real rapids.)

Google Maps has excellent resolution aerials of this reach. We highly recommend going to the "Map" tab, clicking 'Satellite', double clicking near (not on, but near) the put-in location icon, zooming to the maximum resolution (without losing image), and doing a 'virtual tour' to 'walk' down the reach. You'll see no discernable rapids. (Ok, maybe a minor rock garden or two.)

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

Flow in this reach is dependent on a power plant at Gwinn, which generally generates (releases) during the day.

Cited gauge is downstream of Boney Falls Dam (after the take-out for this reach), therefore may not accurately reflect water in this reach.

Section can be run as low as 500cfs.
  500-1500   = class I
1500-6000+ = class I-II

Note: Be aware that indication of a 'runnable' level does not mean that the river is necessarily runnable. In winter/early-spring, readings may be 'ice affected', and/or sections of the river may be impassable due to ice.

If you decide to run the stretch below the dam. Follow the river right bank (like you have a
choice)about 200 yards along some sort of access road.It will bring you to a real nice/easy put-in
site. 4/8/06
