River Description

Most of this run is fun "Land of Sky Blue Waters" (for those who remember the old Hamm's beer commercials) bobbling along. A few larger waves and holes will be encountered, some of which can become rather sticky and/or playful at moderate to high levels.

The largest drop is rather midway through the run, where the river drops over a large bedrock intrusion. The main channel has offset huge holes, midway down the large jumbled drop, which do not look very boater-friendly. A tight right-side sneak is possible, though it contains a couple of piton spots.

The remainder of the run is more like the earlier portion, with easy bobbling and occasional ledge/wave/holes.

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

To find the USGS stage marker, walk down from wayside at Hwy.61 bridge and walk upstream (river right). Gauge is on a cement face, and may be easy to miss first time you look for it.
Historically, runs on this river are good around 2.6' on this gauge, give or take 0.3' or so.
However, boaters are reporting (Spring, 2009) that the gauge has apparently changed. Now, readings of 3.3' (give or take 0.3') would appear to be optimum.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources appears to be taking stage readings at this site. Reportedly, 12.5' on their gauge correlates to 2.5' on the old stick gauge. MDNR data is available at the DNR Gauge. You can use a pull-down list on the graph (and hit the 'Update' button) to get the flow (CFS) values. For what it's worth, 12.1' is about 200 cfs, and 12.3' is about 250 cfs.

Area boaters are reporting that the gauge appears to have changed (Spring, 2009). While formerly
levels of 2.6' (plus or minus about 0.3') were 'optimal', now you should be looking for 3.3' (plus
or minus about 0.3'). There is also apparently some controversy about whether the reports from the
DNR are accurate.

Rapid Descriptions

Landslide Falls (Class V, Mile 2.4)

This will be a portage or a 'sneak' for the majority of boaters. Most of the flow goes through a nasty sequence of holes and slides. Tight to the right, a sneak channel can be run, but contains at least a few major piton spots.
