Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

The Moorefield gauge on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac is a commonly used indicator, but construction work near the gauge station is throwing the reading off in 2004, so ignore it for now (2.5 ft is considered a good minimum correlation).

For now, focus instead on the Brandywine gauge, also on the SFSB Potomac. Limited observations indicate 2.5 ft. on this gauge (referenced above) should also equal minimum for the Lost.

Because the river flows underground through here much of the year, it takes a lot of water for the Dry Gorge to run.

Another correlation is to look for 4 to 6 feet on the Cootes Store gauge on the NF Shenandoah.

There is a painted gauge on the Route 55 bridge, west side abutment. A level of 1 to 3 feet is good, though it can be run down to zero. Construction of the Corridor H highway may ultimately change this gauge. Report observations here.
