River Description
I'm not real sure about anything on this section.
This would probably be a canoe type float trip as there isn't much whitewater.
I've run a short section of it from the Colorado Line through part of the Jicarilla Apache
Reservation in NM. There wasn't much to talk about. I would assume there are fences crossing the
river in many places. The Tribe recently ('99) built some diversion structures for its water
treatment facility. The structures offer some OK play at around 90-200 cfs, and maybe better at
higher levels. The gauge for this section is Navajo River Below
Oso Diversion Dam on the DWR gauges page.
If you are planning on running the section in the Reservation (almost any part of the river in
the state of NM) give me a shout (I work for the Tribe) and I will try to facilitate access which
may or may not be an issue.
For more information, see New Mexico Whitewater, by NM State Parks, and Rivers of The
Southwest, by Anderson and Hopkinson.
