Accident Description

There was a flash flood on the San Juan! It flashed big yesterday, 20,700 cfs, dropped to 3,500, and then up to a steady 9k(-ish). Lime Creek went from 3" deep to 30 feet deep in minutes. A group of 23 (10 adults and 13 kids from age 6-15) was caught at the at the lime Creek Camp during the flood. They all got out safe but lost everything. People at several other camps (Oljeto, Steer Gulch, Grand Gulch) lost boats and gear. Park service was evacuating everyone.

Whitney Montandon on San Juan River Rats: "It was crazy we are all still pretty shocked. Never have any of us experienced anything like it. Here are some pictures and a video. That creek was a tiny 3 inch nothing and we put tents well above the ledges of that wash. In the end what pumped out of lime creek pumping bigger than the San Juan itself."
