On July 10, 2004, 52-year-old Layton Ledgister was paddling a rented two-person kayak on the Upper Delaware River with his 13-year-old son. When their boat capsized, the boy was able to swim to shore. Mr. Ledgister, however, unsuccessfully tried to stay afloat and drowned. An MD who was paddling the river attempted CPR and pronounced Mr. Ledgister dead. Police said that the father and son were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident, but that they were not properly secured.
