Join AW on the Pit River October 1st and 2nd!

This Saturday October 1st and Sunday October 2nd, American Whitewater will be out on the Pit River in Northern California to celebrate and enjoy whitewater releases from Fall River Mills to Highway 299. On Saturday evening, AW staff and volunteers will be at the Pit River Recreation Area campground. Come on over after 6 p.m. to join us for a beverage and get caught up on what we're doing in California and throughout the West!  

The Pit River is heavily impacted by hydroelectricity, and whitewater recreation opportunities have been decimated as a result. Releases were agreed upon in the 2003 FERC relicensing process to mitigate the loss of boating opportunities, and last June, FERC approved four days of recreational whitewater boating flows to take place in October each year. This year's flows will be released over October 1st and 2nd, and October 15th and 16th, and are expected to be around 850-950 cfs. The fate of the summer flushing flows, which boaters enjoyed between 2004 and 2009, is still unknown. American Whitewater continues to work to ensure that the decision about their future is based on sound science.  

The Pit has something to offer everyone, with a range of Class II to Class IV water, and stunning scenery, waterfalls and geology. We look forward to seeing you on the river!
