House Passes Bill to Flood Wild and Scenic Merced
On Tuesday, the House passed HR 2578, a package of 14 bills that included a proposal to roll back the boundary of the Wild and Scenic Merced River and allow the Merced Irrigation District to raise the elevation of McClure Reservoir. The reach that is proposed to be inundated provides outstanding recreation opportunities - from whitewater boating to biking, hiking and camping. The area also is home to the state protected limestone salamander.
Thanks to everyone who contacted their Congressional Representatives. How did your Representative vote?
The project is not a done deal, and heads to the Senate next. If you live in California, please contact Senators Feinstein and Boxer and tell them how important the Wild and Scenic Merced is to you.
If you live outside of California and you're worried about this happening to your favorite Wild and Scenic River, contact your Senator.
American Whitewater will continue to track this issue. Stay tuned for updates and future action in the Senate.
