Alamosa, Colorado – American Whitewater needs your help to define streamflows that support the full range of recreational boating opportunities on the Rio Grande and Conejos Rivers in Southern Colorado. Information collected by this study will be used to assess river-dependent recreation as part of a joint stream management planning effort between American Whitewater and the Rio Grande Headwaters Restoration Project.

Once completed, the Stream Management Plan for the Rio Grande and Conejos Rivers will be used to inform projects to restore and protect the watershed, and help enhance economies that rely on environmental and recreational water uses in the Basin.

We have developed this survey so individuals and outfitters can report how changes in stream flows affect recreation quality on each of our targeted river segments. Your input will help American Whitewater define the full range of flows necessary to support recreation experiences, from technical low water to challenging high water opportunities, and promote recreation throughout the Stream Management Planning Process.

The study is focused on several sub-segments within the following reaches of river:

- Rio Grande River, Box Canyon to Del Norte;

- Conejos River from Platoro Reservoir to Mogote Camp Ground;

- Rio Grande River From Alamosa to to Lee Trail, New Mexico.

If you have experience on any of these sections of river, we need your input!

Please encourage your fellow paddlers to participate in this study as well.

American Whitewater’s Rio Grande and Conejos River Recreational Needs Assessment Project is funded by a grant from the State of Colorado, Colorado Water Conservation Board with matching funding provided by the Walton Family Foundation's Innovation Fund and individual contributions.
