Mokelumne River Release Schedule (CA)

Posted: 05/07/2003
Thanks to the high April precip, releases have been scheduled for the Mokelumne River in May and June, creating flows in several different sections of whitewater ranging in difficulty from class II to IV.

American Whitewater secured these releases and additional flow information in the relicense process for the Mokelumne Hydroelectric Project.

For the long-range forecast, weekend forecast, and latest flows, stay tuned to http://www.americanwhitewater.org/mok/ .

The current release schedule is as follows (be sure to check the above link for updates):

Reach Dates
Tiger Creek Dam Run
May 24-25
May 31-June 1
June 7-8
Ponderosa Way Run
May 24

The Tiger Creek section (Class IV) is roughly three miles long. The put in is directly downstream of the Tiger Creek afterbay dam. Use the dirt road to access the river. Take-out at the Red Corral Road bridge. Parking Notice: Parking at Tiger Creek Dam Run put in may be limited due to construction activities associated with the new Mokelumne License.

The Ponderosa Way section (Class III) can be combined with the Class II Electra Run downstream making a six mile paddle. You can also add an additional three miles by paddling downstream of Highway 49 to the Middle Bar bridge.

There is also a possibility that Devil's Nose (Class IV) will run at the end of May, so stay tuned to the forecast for updates.

Also be sure to check out the improved flow information on the popular Electra Run (Class II).

During your visit to the Mokelumne please exercise appropriate boater etiquette including respect for other river recreationists. There is limiting parking at the put-ins and take-outs and no trash receptacles. There will be periodic monitoring of these whitewater releases to get appropriate counts on whitewater use, behavior and biological effects of flows on the river environment. Be courteous to the individuals conducting the monitoring. Future releases are dependent on use and biological monitoring.
